Mrs. Catherine Reid Stephens Maynard, 91, of Dalton, passed away Sunday January 23, 2010.
She was born in Apex, North Carolina to Dr. Romulus W. and Dovie Sugg Stephens. After attending Meredith College, she married Elbert E. Maynard, Jr. in 1937 and lived for forty years in Hamlet, NC. before moving to Dalton, GA. in 1984.
During her years in Hamlet, she managed an insurance agency and with her husband, worked to establish a credit union for the Seaboard Airline Employees. She always remained a devoted mother, church member and community volunteer. She was a member of the Eastern Star for fifty years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years and two brothers, Romulus and Kenneth Stephens.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Fred Avett of Dalton; grandsons, Marshall (Jennifer) Avett of New York City. and Reid (Claire) Avett of Washington, D.C.; great-grandchildren, Isabella Rose Avett of New York City and Tilghman Stephens Avett of Washington, D. C.; brother and sister-in-law, Alvis and Linda Stephens of Hendersonville, NC; sisters-in-law Lucille M. Brandis of Callahan, FL and Nancy M. Brown and husband Henry of Apex, NC; cherished nieces and nephews and their families.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 A.M. at the Dalton First United Methodist Church with Dr. Robin Lindsey officiating.
The family will receive friends in the Atrium immediately following the service.
Burial in Whitfield Memorial Gardens.
