Mr. Virgil T. Smith, 83, of Dalton, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2007.
He was the son of the late, Roy Virgil and Annie Mae Painter Smith and was preceded in death by his sister, Jeraldine Smith Cady.
V. T. was a member of the Dalton First Baptist Church - Scrap Iron Sunday School Class and New Horizon Choir, Veteran of World War II with the United Stares Navy having served in the Pacific Theatre; worked for the Veterans Services Office; was a Georgia Legislator from 1956 to 1972; past President of the Southern Legislative Conference, served on the National Legislator Leader Conference; was the owner of Smith Insurance Agency; Former Pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, Harmony Baptist Church and Carolyn Baptist Church, past State of Georgia Chaplin for the V. F. W.; Local, State and National Office
Coordinator for A.A.R.P.; was a in-house Counsel for the Life University and retired from the Georgia Department of Human Resources.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Terri Holloway Smith of Dalton.
Daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Bill McManus of Opelika, Al.; son and daughter-in-law, Virgil T. “Tim” and Margaret Smith of Dalton; grandchildren, Timothy Todd Smith, Margaret Jhan Bhel, Derek Ivester and Brooke Caldwell; one great-grandchild, Ashlin Holly Ivester; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Sunday, May 6, 2007 at 2 P.M. at Dalton First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Wilson and the Rev. Larry Flanagan officiating.
Burial will be in Whitfield Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home Saturday from 5 to 7 P.M.
The family ask that flowers please be omitted and memorials be made to the Dalton First Baptist Church, or to the Dalton First Baptist Church Reaching Campaign, P.O. Box 827, Dalton, Ga. 30722 or to ones favorite charity.
