Mr. Ray “Frog” Fowler, 76, of Dalton, passed away Monday, April 4, 2011 at Hamilton Medical Center.
He was the son of the late Ernest J. and Bernice Metcalf Fowler and was preceded in death by his sisters, Ernestine Barber and Vivian Fowler; brothers, Dewitt Fowler and Derrell Fowler.
He was a graduate of Dalton High School and L.M.U., where he played baseball at both schools. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of Grove Level Baptist Church.
Ray coached at Westside and Valley Point High School and was inducted into the Dalton Parks and Recreation Softball Hall of Fame and the Heartland Softball Hall of Fame. He will be remembered as a lifetime ball player.
He is survived by his loving wife, Helen Fowler of Dalton; daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanene Fowler and Dan Mason of Atlanta, GA., Gigi and Paul Dykes of Lawrenceville,GA., Myra and Shane Sloan of Knoxville,TN.; sons and daughter-in-law, Jeff and René Fowler of Cartersville, GA. and Tony Smithey of Atlanta; sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Jerry Gibson of Dalton, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Frances and William Smith and Barbara Gravitte all of Resaca,GA.; grandchildren, Jennifer Dykes, Jordan Dykes, Ty Fowler, Jacob Fowler, Kaleigh Fowler, Taylor Sloan and Maggie Sloan; special friend, Shag Phelps; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Thursday at 11 A.M. at the Grove Level Baptist Church with the Rev. David Hendrix officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Love Funeral Home Wednesday after 5 p.m.
The family request flowers be omitted and memorials be made to Grove Level Baptist Church, 2802 Cleveland Hwy., Dalton, GA. 30721 or to one’s favorite charity.
