Lorene McDaniel Chitwood died July 25, 2007 in Charleston, SC. She was a long time resident of Dalton, GA, moving to Charleston three and a half years ago. The daughter of Deedie and Nettie London McDaniel, she was born on December 1, 1914 in Catoosa County, Georgia. She was a graduate of Carson Newman College and received her Master of Education degree from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga.
Mrs. Chitwood was a life long educator, teaching in the schools of Catoosa County and Rossville, GA before coming to the Dalton Public School System. For more than forty years, she was a teacher or principal in Dalton’s schools. Several generations of Dalton’s children were in her classrooms.
She was married to the late Claude David Chitwood for over fifty-three years. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Judy Evans Chitwood of Charleston, SC; her grandchildren, Julianna Chitwood of Rockville, MD and James Chitwood, Jr. and his wife, Gabriella Chitwood, of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Peggy McDaniel of Hickory, NC and her brother-in-law, Roy Chitwood of Dalton. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
On Monday, July 31 at 10:00am, the family will receive visitors in the parlor of the First Baptist Church. A memorial service will follow in the church chapel at 11:30 am with Dr. Billy Nimmons officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Dalton-Whitfield Habitat for Humanity, 1499 North Thornton Ave., Dalton, Ga. 30720.
