Dr. Sidney L. Sellers III, 85, of Dalton, passed away Friday, December 9, 2011.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney L. Sellers Jr. and Ludah Zeigler Sellers, and his first wife, Mary Nix Williams Sellers. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Oehler Sellers, sons and daughters-in-law, Sidney L. (Chip) Sellers IV and Denise, Williams Scott Sellers and Dawn, and daughter and son-in-law, Susan Patterson and Tony, all of Dalton. Also, step children Tyna Wise Stevenson (Barron) and Michael Wise (Mary) both of Dalton. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Abby Sellers, Ty Sellers, Payton Sellers, Hutton Sellers, Worth Sellers, Cal Patterson and Carter Patterson. Step grandchildren Henry and Jackson Stevenson and Elizabeth Ann, Sarah and Forrest Wise, plus many neices and nephews. He is survived by his sisters; Blanche Collins of Columbus, GA, Marion Yarbrough of Stockbridge, GA and Nancy Woods (Jay) of Atlanta, GA; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Claude and Charlotte Williams of Athens, GA.;

Dr. Sellers was born June 2, 1926 in Camden, NJ to parents that were both natives of Lowndes County, GA. At 12 years of age his family moved to Tampa, Florida where he graduated from Plant High School, before joining the United States Navy during World War II, where he served in the medical corps. After receiving his honorable discharge from the service, he obtained his undergraduate degree from Emory University in 1950 and then his medical degree from the Emory University School of Medicine in 1953. Dr. Sellers spent the next four years in residency at Crawford W. Long Hospital in Atlanta before setting up a practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Dalton, Georgia in July 1957.
Dr. Sellers, along with his partner and close friend, Dr. David Nowell, were the first board certified OB/GYN practitioners in the state of Georgia, north of Atlanta. Dr. Sellers continued in practice in Dalton for 50 years, retiring in 2007. During his time in Dalton he served on the boards of many local health and human service agencies and in various leadership positions in other community organizations. He was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Hamilton Medical Center. He was a long time member of the Rotary Club of Dalton and served as its President in 1973. He served on the board of the Salvation Army, on the Board of Directors for Wachovia Bank and, prior to that, the board of Dalton Federal Savings and Loan. He was influential in the establishment of the Dalton/Whitfield Senior Center. He was on the staff of Hamilton Medical Center for 50 years and served as chairman of the medical staff for several terms.
Dr. Sellers was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Dalton and more recently a member at the First Presbyterian Church of Dalton.
Visitation will be held from 1:00-4:00 on Monday, December 12, 2011 in the Fellowship Hall at the First Presbyterian Church of Dalton and the funeral service will follow the visitation at 4:00 in the sanctuary.
Honorary pallbearers will be The Men's Bible Class of the First Presbyterian Church of Dalton and the Scrap Iron Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church of Dalton.
