Dr. Martin “Marty” Craig Michaels, 55, of Dalton, Georgia, died Sunday, December 18, 2011 from complications of heart failure.

He was preceded in death by his step-father Gaetano Catalano. Marty is survived by his loving wife Cynthia “Cindy” Andrews Michaels of Dalton; daughter and son-in-law Amanda and Chris Brown of Denver, Colorado; son Andrew “Drew” Michaels and his fiancé Shannon Walsh of Smyrna, Georgia; and daughter Hannah Michaels of Dalton, Georgia; his mother Judith Catalano of Sarasota, Florida; father Jerome Michaels of Buffalo, New York; sister Susan Goldstein and partner James Ruszczyk of Buffalo, New York; sister and brother-in-law Linda and Eric Groat of Buffalo, New York; brother-in-law and spouse James and Kim Andrews of Niceville, Florida; brother-in-law and spouse David and Anna Andrews of Greenville, South Carolina; brother-in-law and spouse Jeff and Kathy Andrews of Norcross, Georgia; nieces and nephews, Benn and Alex Goldstein; Matthew, Mary Alice, Shanna, and Megan Groat; Nick Phillips; and Dawn, Noah, and Kyra Andrews; and a really good dog Braydon.

Serving the Dalton community as a pediatrician since 1984, Marty was the founding partner of Ped’s Care, P.C., where he served many families and their children for many years. He was a past president of the Georgia chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was an outstanding and compassionate pediatrician who advocated tirelessly for access for all children to receive appropriate pediatric care, both at the state and national level.

Marty was a devoted husband and loving father. He used music to celebrate life. He loved gardening, exercise and wellness, and cooking for his loved ones.

A longtime member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, he served on the vestry, and he used his leadership to bring in a Lenten series for adult education and to create an annual community jazz service on Shrove Tuesday.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 22, 2011, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Dalton, Georgia. The family will receive visitors in St. Mark’s parish hall from 1:00 – 3:00 pm with a service following at 3:00 pm.
