Mr. James “Jim” Marr passed away peacefully on Friday, January 27, 2012 at Ridgewood Manor.
Jim was born in Marietta, Georgia in October 25, 1928.
He was preceded in death by his parents, T.H. and Ada Marr.
Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years, Inez Marr of Dalton; daughters and son-in-law, Janice Pressley of Dalton and Joyce and Robert Dorman of Evans, Ga; sister, Pauline Massey of Conyers, Ga; brother and sister-in-law, Guy and Anne Marr of Springfield, MO; grandchildren, Jonathan and Felicia Pressley of Calhoun, Ga, Nathan and Laura Pressley of Dalton and Diana and Sarah Dorman of Augusta, Ga; great-granddaughters, Elizabeth and Sydney Pressley of Dalton; cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
After moving to Dalton in 1965, Jim was affiliated with The Bank of Dalton serving in various positions including President and CEO. He retired from The Bank of Dalton in 1985. Jim was also associated with Hardwick Bank & Trust Company, along with its sister banks in Calhoun and Cartersville. He later retired from the First National Bank of Chatsworth in 2002. Throughout his career he was a member in the Georgia Bankers Association, American Bankers Association, Robert Morris Association as well as many other bank related organizations.
In addition to his banking career of sixty-six years, he was very active in the Dalton/Whitfield community. Jim was committed to and proud of Dalton’s growth and progress. He served in many capacities of civic organizations including the Dalton Lion’s Club, Dalton College Foundation, Dalton/Whitfield Chamber of Commerce, Dalton Downtown Development Authority, United Way, Cherokee Boys Estate, Whitfield Healthcare Foundation, American Cancer Society and the Dalton Historical Preservation Committee.
Another passion of Jim’s was traveling. He and Inez enjoyed planning the itinerary and exploring all fifty United States., many of which were visited in their motor home. They also spent time in Canada, Mexico, England and Israel.
Jim was a longstanding member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Dalton. At his request, he asked that members of Ron Kennedy’s Sunday School Class be honorary pallbearers.
Services for Jim will be Monday at 2 P.M. at the First Baptist Church of Dalton with Dr. Bill Ireland and Rev. Phillip Cannon officiating.
The family will receive friends in the atrium of the church Monday from noon until the funeral hour at 2 P.M.
Burial will be at Kennesaw Memorial Gardens, Whitlock Ave., Marietta, Georgia.
