Mr. Howard Lee Pope, 91, of Dalton, passed away Friday March 2, 2012 at a local hospital.
He was born in Ringgold, GA on February 9, 1921 to the late Benjamin Clayton Pope and Annie Kittle Pope and was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Dyer Pope.
Howard was a 30 year veteran of the United States Marine Corp. and served during three wars- World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War and was a member of the Ringgold American Legion Post # 0040.
He was of interdenominational faith, and enjoyed attending Cowboy Church.
In 1985, he retired from the State of North Carolina School system and spent his retirement years doing the things he loved, particularly, traveling with friends and family, and dancing, which he did at least twice a week. Those who knew him will always cherish his life stories, sense of humor and smile.
Howard is survived by his second wife, Phyllis E. Pope of Dalton; five step-children, nine grandchildren; sister, Eva Mae Williams of Dalton; nephew Phil (Teena) Williams of Dalton; cousins, Evelyn Dunn, Eloise Dunn and Alvin (Wilma) Kittle; friends close to his heart, Edna Taylor and Jeanette Coker; other special family and friends also survive.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Love Funeral Home with the Rev. Isaac Walker officiating.
Burial will follow in Whitfield Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home on Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 5 to 9 p.m.
