Mrs. Mary Alice Jones Kinney passed away on May 15 at her residence in Dalton. She had celebrated her 93rd birthday on May 2.
Mary Alice was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Samuel Jones of Dawson, Georgia. She was the eleventh of twelve children. The youngest, Mrs. Edith Bond of Alpharetta, is now the last surviving child of that family.
Mary Alice received a B.S. degree in Home Economics from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville. Upon graduation, she filled the unexpired term of her father as Tax Collector of Terrell County and was the youngest state officer in Georgia.
She married Hinton Eugene Kinney on January 1, 1941. She is the mother of Rev. Donald Kinney, O.C.D. of San Jose, CA and Jannie Kinney Dentel, whose husband is Bill, of Annandale, VA. Mary Alice and Gene were married 55 happy years until he died in 1996. They dedicated their lives to caring for their family. They were known for their commitment to their family, friends, church, and community. Mary Alice was a kind and caring wife and mother. She will be greatly missed.
Mrs. Kinney was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher and served on the Administrative Council, Board of Trustees, and as President of the United Methodist Women. She worked with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She was a member of the American Lung Association of Georgia and served as President of that organization for the state of Georgia. She was a charter member and President of the Dalton League of Women Voters and President of the Dalton Bird and Garden Club. In 1976 the Dalton Junior Woman’s Club selected her as Dalton’s Mother of the Year.
Since 2001, Mrs. Kinney lived at the Royal Oaks Senior Apartments and at the Gardens Extended Living Facility, where she was very happy. She is survived by numerous relatives.
Services will be this Saturday, May 19 at 11 a.m. at Dalton First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Robin Lindsey and the Rev. Dr. Joe Bowen (nephew of Gene Kinney) officiating.
Burial will be in Whitfield Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home this Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the funeral hour in the atrium of the church.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church in Dalton or to the Carmelite Monastery, P. O. Box 3420, San Jose, CA 95156.
