Mr. Robert Lee (Bob) Ellis of Dalton died Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Hamilton Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born August 22, 1924 in Dalton, GA to the late, Samuel Carter and Fannie Perry Ellis. He was employed by Shaw Industries, Rogers Dye Finishing and Cabin Crafts. He was preceded in death by his brothers Perry Marion and Samuel Wayne Ellis. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Boyd Ellis, by daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Rick Kearney of Kinston, NC., Sharon and Brad Williams of Greenville, SC. and Laura Leigh Ellis of Birmingham, AL; a brother and sister-in-law, John Reavis and Sara Ellis of Winston-Salem, NC and his grandchildren, Tyson, Sarah Kathryn, Bradley and Carter Williams and Samuel Kearney.
He was a life long, faithful member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and a member of various committees. He also served as scoutmaster of the church sponsored Troup 111 for approximately 15 years during which time he was instrumental in the construction of the troop’s scout hut. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor for scoutmasters, inducted into the Order of the Arrow, and the Good Shepherd Award, along with other notable awards for his troop and for himself. He and his wife suvived cancer and worked enthusiastically to support cancer prevention programs. Due to this interest, he served as President of the Whitfield County American Cancer Society. Mr. Ellis was a devoted, loving husband, father and grandfather to his family and a faithful friend to many. Recently more than 28 former scouts he mentored during his scouting days honored him on his 83rd birthday. He will be greatly missed by all. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 8, 2007 at 11 o’clock a.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Wilson, the Rev. Larry Flangan and the Rev. Phillip Cannon officiating. Internment to follow at West Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home Sunday from 5 to 8 P.M.
