Mr. William Benjamin “Benny” Bennett, 78, of Cartersville and formerly of Dalton, passed away, Wednesday October 17, 2007 in Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta. He was born September 18, 1929 in Cedartown, Ga. on the town square in a tent, to the late James and Lula Bennett. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Bennett in 2001; brothers, Lester Bennett, Earnest Bennett and J. C. Bennett; sister, Mary Gilliam. Benny was a veteran having served in the United States Air Force from 1948 to 1952. He married Betty Sue Akins in 1950 and in 1966, they opened the Country Diner on Sandtown road in Marietta, GA., where they remained until 1985, when they relocated to Kennesaw. Benny was a truck driver for Yellow Freight. He was currently employed by Elmwood Apartments as a Maintenance Supervisor. Benny was a member of the Kennesaw Shrine Club, where he proudly supported charity events. Benny and his family lived in Cartersville, Ga. until his death.
He his survived by his wife, Louise Dodd Bennett of Cartersville; sons and daughter-in-law, Robert Gerald, Gregory and Linda Bennett all of Cartersville; step-children, Lois Jefferson, Brenda Ringl and Tonya Farrow; grandchildren, Robert Bennett, Geoffrey Bennett and Nicholas Bennett; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 P.M. at the Church of God of the Union Assembly in Dalton with the Rev. Rodney Kennedy and the Rev. Alton Carter officiating. Burial will follow in Whitfield Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Friday and Saturday from 6 to 9 P.M..
