Mr. Jay Garmany, 75, of Dalton passed away Thursday, September 20, 2012 at his residence.
Jay served 4 years in the United States Navy from1956 to 1960. He made 3 trips to Antarctica with Admiral Byrd on the USS Arneb on Deep Freeze Operation.
He opened Garmany’s Ltd. in 1964 and was in menswear retail for 44 years, past president of menswear Retailers of Georgia, served on the executive board of Dalton Chamber of Commerce, past member of Dalton Carpet Capital Rotary Club, served on Vestry at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, archery club president, he was inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame by Dalton Parks and Recreation Dept. in 2007, clogged with Dixie Style Cloggers for 25 years, served as bailiff for Whitfield County Superior Court and was an avid golfer.
Jay was born in Rome, GA. and was the son of the late Clyde and Agnes McKinney Garmany.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Betty Duke Garmany of Dalton; son and daughter-in-law, Skip and Cynthia Garmany of Chattanooga TN; daughter and son-in-law, Crystal and R. Mike Withrock of Dalton; brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Virginia Garmany of Dalton; grandchild, Erin Garmany of Chattanooga; neices and nephews also survive.
Services will be Saturday at noon at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church of Dalton with the Rev. Patricia M. Grace officiating. Burial will follow in West Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon in the Parrish Hall of the church.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 852, Dalton, GA. 30722-0852.
