Dorothy King

d. September 25, 2012

Dorothy Bess Wilson King of Dalton died Monday night, September 24 at the age of 92.
Born October 26, 1919 in Huntsville, AL, she had lived in Dalton for 49 years. For nearly 30 years she was a lunchroom manager in the Dalton Public Schools, from which she retired in 1997.
Mrs. King was a member of First Baptist Church of Dalton and for many years played piano for the church’s Scrap Iron Sunday School Class. She enjoyed playing piano for nearly all of her life, especially church music. She was also an accomplished seamstress and knitter, and she spread her love of reading to all of her family. Both her immediate and extended families were very important to her.
Part of the Greatest Generation, she was a member of the second graduating class of Lincoln High School in Huntsville. She then worked for Lincoln Mills and at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville during World War II in support of the country’s war effort. After the war ended, her husband’s textile chemistry career took her to homes in several cities and towns before they moved to Dalton in 1963.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Fletcher Wilson and Mary Beatrice White Wilson, by her husband of 65 years, Hulett Lasseter King, and by her sister Mary Wilson Evans of Auburn, AL.
She is survived by her daughter Carol Ann Schlich and son-in-law Carl Schlich of St. Simons Island, GA; her daughter Linda Mullinax and son-in-law Reggie Mullinax of Dalton; her son Steve King and daughter-in-law Zita Gonzalez-King of Atlanta; and her son Mark King of Fresno, CA. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Beth Lemke and her husband Matt Lemke of St. Simons Island, GA; Jennifer Marci Henderson of Savannah, GA; Linck Schlich of Atlanta; Kimberly Ann Henderson of Atlanta; and Brad King of Cleveland, TN. Four nieces and two nephews also survive, as do many members of her extended family including many cousins who gathered annually for a reunion that she loved to attend.
Mrs. King’s family wishes to thank the staff members, both at Wood Dale Health and Rehabilitation and at The Gardens Assisted Living, for their kindness and compassionate care.
Funeral service will be Friday at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church of Dalton with Dr. Bill Ireland, the Rev. Phillip Cannon and Dr. Carl Schlich III officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church from 9:30 to 11:00 am on Friday.
Honorary pallbearers include Emily Bray, Gail Duke, Betty Ellis, Susan Gardiner, Martha and Dewey Hughes, Barbara and Roger Jewell, Buna Leonard, Sarah Lusk, Sara Ann Masters, Kay Moss, Helen Nix, Mary Etta and Drayton Sanders, and Jimmy Ward.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 827, Dalton GA 30722.
