Mrs. Alva Tyler Pace, 91, an Alzheimer’s victim, passed away in sleep at her home, Wednesday night, December 19, 2007. She was preceded in death by her brother, Henry K. Tyler.
She was a native of Aiken, S.C. where her parents Earl J. and Clara Tyler lived before moving to Lakeland, Fla. in 1925 and Earl worked as an agent of Gulf Life Insurance Company. In 1932, he was transferred to Wauchula, Fla., where Mark and Alva met as students of Wauchula High School in the fall of 1932. In 1935, Earl was transferred to Brunswick, Ga., where Mark and Alva were married May 31,1936, in her parents home. They later moved to Dalton on October 25, 1945.
Alva was a member of First Baptist Church of Dalton where , in her younger years, she taught a class of girls in the Intermediate Sunday School Department. She also was a former president of the Lenna Judd Woman’s Club and of the Lions Ladies Auxiliary. In 1966-68 she was editor of the employee newspaper, “Carpet Chatter”, of E & B, a prominent carpet plant in southeast Dalton. She was a lover of poetry and enjoyed writing poems for members of her family.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Mark Pace, former editor for 37 years of the Dalton Daily-Citizen, now historian and information specialist at North Georgia Electric; sister, Mrs. Grace Rogers of Lancaster, Pa; daughters, Peggy Pace Smith of Dalton, Patsy Pace and son-in-law, Dan Westfall of Birmingham, Al.; grandsons and their wives, Danny and Terry Bramlett Westfall of Dalton, Dr. Mark and Darby Elsberry Westfall of Birmingham, Al., Stanton and Jeannie Battema Smith of Signal Mountain, Tn.; great-grandchildren, Chase Westfall, Dylan Westfall, Adam Westfall, Mia Smith, and Abby Smith; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Saturday at 2 P.M. from the First Baptist Church of Dalton with Dr. Bill Wilson and Dr. Billy T. Nimmons officiating.
Burial will follow in Whitfield Memorial Gardens with her grandchildren and great-grandsons serving as pallbearers and her Sunday School Class and Lions Ladies Auxiliary serving as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home Friday from 5 to 8 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 855 Abutment Rd., Suite 6, Dalton, Ga. 30721 or to the First Baptist Church of Dalton, P.O. Box 827, Dalton, Ga. 30722-0827.
