Mr. Garmon Junior Baggett, 87, who proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, passed away peacefully in his sleep early Sunday morning at his home in Dalton.
Baggett, who lived in the area his entire life, spent the last 36 years in happy marriage to his loving wife, Ruth.
Baggett was born in Murray County in 1925 and, upon enlisting in the Navy, saw combat in at least four battles in the Pacific War Theater during World War II. After the war, he returned to the Dalton area, where he spent the rest of his life working as a local businessman, later retiring and enjoying hobbies such as bass fishing and spending time with his large extended family. He was a proud member of Eleventh Avenue Baptist Church in Dalton.
He was the son of the late Freeman and Bessie Quarles Baggett and was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Baggett, Freddie Baggett and Odell Baggett.
Garmon is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Mrs. Ruth Hill Baggett of the residence; son and daughter-in-law, Dewayne and Wyondia Hill of Ringgold; daughters and sons-in-law, Shelia and Jim Croft of Dalton and Rhonda and David King of Alpharetta; grandchildren. Dawn Harness (Rande) of Ringgold, Jody Self of Dalton, Brandon Hill of Ringgold, Alex Burkett (K.F.) of Washington D.C., and Alison Burkett of Athens, GA; two great-grandchildren, Austin and Garrett Harness both of Ringgold; sisters and brother-in-law, Gertrude Kilgore, Delree Ridley and Mary and Bruce Taylor all of Chatsworth; brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Joyce Baggett and David and Janice Baggett all of Chatsworth; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 P.M. in the chapel of Love Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Maddox and the Rev. Ronald Guffey officiating.
Burial will follow in Whitfield Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home Monday from 5 to 8 P.M.
