Juanita Mobley Clifton of Dalton passed away Sunday, February 10, 2013. She was born in Dublin, Georgia, daughter of the late, Georgia Dean and Marcus M. Mobley and was preceded in death by her husband Walton H. Clifton, Jr. to whom she was married to for over 50 years. She attended South Georgia Teacher’s College in Statesboro, GA and the University of Georgia.
Mrs. Clifton was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church in Greenville, SC. and was a Sunday school teacher and counselor for intermediates for 4 years. While attending Atlanta First United Methodist Church she was President of the United Methodist Women for 2 years and President of the Church Alter Guild for 1 year. She also was Communion Steward for Atlanta First Methodist Church for 17 years. Most recently, Mrs. Clifton was a member of Dalton First United Methodist Church and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Clifton was a talented China Painter and was State President of the Georgia Federation of China Painters for 2 years. She was also an active member of the Atlanta Women’s Club and was on the state credentials committee of the Georgia Federation of Women’s Club for 3 years. Mrs. Clifton co-chaired the Music Department at the Atlanta Women’s Club and was President of the Northside Women’s Club for 2 years. She also chaired the trustees for several years. Mrs. Clifton was named Club Woman of the year for the Northside Women's Club for the 1981-1982 year and was Member of the Year for the 1988-1989 year. Mrs. Clifton was also a member of the Emory Auxiliary for 17 years. Juanita and her husband Cliff were honored to be ushers at the last Billy Graham Crusade in Atlanta. In 1999, Mrs. Clifton was one of twelve women nominated for the Outstanding Women of Georgia.
She is survived by her sister, Georgia Dean Tucker of Houston, TX, nieces and nephews Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. Newton. Grand and great-grand nieces and nephews Mr. Rich Newton, Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Newton, and Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Newton, all of Atlanta, GA. Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Welch of Greenville, SC. Mr. and Mrs. Mel Mobley, Margaret Mobley all of Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Kisor, Dalton, Emily Kisor, Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. Greg Burnette, Ali Burnette, Brooks Burnette, all of Gainesville, GA. Mr. Ken Tarpley, Dalton.
Memorial services will be Wednesday at 1 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church of Dalton with Dr. Robin Lindsey officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
