Mrs. Laura Celestia McDaniel, 96, of Dalton and formerly of Atlanta, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008.
She was the daughter of the late, Philip Spencer Dunlap, Sr. and Willie Mae Jones McDaniel and was preceded in death by her husband, William L. McDaniel, Sr.; brother, Philip S. Dunlap, Jr., William Dunlap; half-sister, Annie Howard Dunlap; half-brother, Samuel Dunlap.
Celestia graduated from the University of Georgia in 1933 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Applied Arts, she then moved to New York and studied Fashion Design, she then moved back to Atlanta and went to work for Commercial Union Assurance, where she worked until she retired in 1978. Celestia moved to Dalton and started as a Red Cross Volunteer at Hamilton Medical Center until she retired due to health reasons in 2007, she was a life long member of the United Methodist Church family.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. William L. McDaniel, Jr. and Maryanne of Dalton; grandchildren, Dr. W. Jeffrey McDaniel and Mary Jo of Woodstock, Ga.; Dr. D. Lee McDaniel and Christin of Knoxville, Tn., Diane McDaniel Parham and Kenneth of Greenville, SC.; sister, Mary Dunlap Wilson of Shalimar, Fl.; great-grandchildren, Jessie and Joe Rodgers, Diana M. McDaniel, Abby L. McDaniel, Elise A. McDaniel, Cole T. McDaniel, Lila Grace Parham, and Claire M. Parham; great-great-grandchild, Sylvianne J. Rodgers; also nieces and nephews.
Services will be Monday at 11 A. M. at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Joe Peabody officiating.
Graveside service will be at 3:30 P.M. Monday from Crest Lawn Cemetery in Atlanta.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home, Saturday from 4 to 7 P.M.
In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Dalton First United Methodist Church, Missions Fund, P.O. Box 627, Dalton, Ga. 30722 or to the Whitfield Health Care Foundation, in honor of Red Cross Volunteers, P.O. Box 1168, Dalton, Ga. 30722.
