Ms. Maxine Brown, 75, passed away Sunday October 23, 2005 at her home in Dalton. Born March 15, 1930 in Dalton, she was preceded in death by her parents Reuben and Anne Halcomb Brown and her brother James Brown.
A graduate of Dalton High School, Maxine attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. She taught business subjects at Dawnville School before moving to Chattanooga and working for E. I. duPont de Nemours as suggestions secretary. She finished her undergraduate degree at the University of Chattanooga.
Later she received an MSW degree in Psychiatric Social Work from Smith College in Northhampton, Mass. She interned at Family Services of Cincinnati and at Judge Baker Guidance Center in Boston. After working at Family Services of Greater Boston, she returned to Dalton where she was founding director of the Dalton- Whitfield County Mental Health Program.
After leaving the health department, Maxine worked as a proofreader at Brown Printing Company. Subsequentally, she became editorial assistant to biographer Virginia Spencer Carr. In this capacity she traveled widely including a year in Poland where Dr. Carr served as a Fulbright Scholar. During that year, Maxine taught English at the University of Wroclaw.
She is survived by a niece, Lynn (Mrs. Keith) Whitworth: a great nephew Chip Whitworth and Michela: a great niece Tracee (Mrs. Joel) Reynolds; a great great nephew Alex Whitworth; a great great niece Reese Reynolds; sister-in-law Sis Brown; and an aunt Louise Martin.
Graveside services will be 11:30 A. M. Tuesday from West Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Matt Evans officiating..
The Family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home Tuesday from 9:30 A. M. til 11:00 A. M.
At Ms. Browns request her body was Cremated.
In lieu of Flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 300 W. Emory St., Suite 108, Dalton, Ga. 30720 or to one‘s favorite charity.
