Mr. Ralph David Miles, 65, of Winchester, TN., and formerly of Dalton, passed away Monday, May 19, 2008 at Erlanger Medical Center.
He was the son of the late G. L. Miles and was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Erskin and Elaine Steel Miles and his maternal grandparents, Sanford Porter and Queen Victoria Miller Reed.
He was a graduate of Northwest High School in 1961 and also earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in Engineering Physics in 1966. He was a veteran of the US Army having served as a commissioned officer from 1964 to 1968 and having also served in the Korean Conflict from 1967 to 1968. Ralph was very active, being involved in Boy Scouts as a Scout Master and also taking trips that included going to Philmont, New Mexico and to Florida Sea Base on Sommerland Key sailing. He was of the Baptist faith and was also an allstar headcoach of both softball and baseball, where he took his baseball team to the state championship game in 1988.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Ravold Miles of the residence; sons and daughters-in-law, Dolan and Erin Miles of Portland, OR., Douglas and Karina Miles of Atlanta; daughters and sons-in-law, Catherine and Ronald Betts of Schweinfurt, Germany, Eleanor and John Yarley of Hinesville, GA., Barbara and Christopher Curtis of Fayetteville, NC.; mother, Nettie Reed Miles of Dalton; brother and sister-in-law, Richard E. and Joyce Miles of Dalton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette and Richard Lermon, Mary and Jeff Davis all of Dalton. 5 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be Thursday at 11 A.M. in the Chapel of Love Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Johnson officiating.
Burial will follow in West Hill Cemetery with American Legion Post 112 in charge of military rites.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home Wednesday from 5 to 8 P.M. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be sent to the Boy Scouts of America, N.W. Ga. Council, P.O. Box 1422, Rome, Ga. 30162-1422.
