Clyde "Sonny" Cross

Mr. Clyde W. “Sonny” Cross, 73, of Dalton, who was affectionately known as “Coach” by many young men in Alabama and Georgia, passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at Hamilton Medical Center.
He was born in Sylacauga, Alabama, son of the late Lewis McDonald Cross and Kathoise Cross.
Sonny was a member of the ChristChurch Presbyterian and retired from the Textile Industry after many years. He was a graduate of Auburn University and later started his coaching career at Sylacauga High School coaching both football and track. He also coached in Athens, Alabama before moving to Dalton to coach at Valley Point High School.
Sonny is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Sally Mungall Cross of Dalton; children, John (Jennifer) Cross and Janet (Jeff) Ellis all of Dalton; grandchildren, Spencer Cross, Madison Ellis and Ansley Ellis of Dalton; sister, Kathy Morrison of West Monroe, LA; sister-in-law, Marjorie Haigler of Dalton; nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 P.M. at ChristChurch Presbyterian with Dr. Mickey Shealy officiating.
Burial will follow in West Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church on Wednesday from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M.
