Mr. Jack W. Smith, age 82, of Dalton, Georgia, formerly of Charleston, SC and Anderson, SC, passed away peacefully at Hamilton Medical Center on Tuesday, November 5, 2013.
Jack was born on January 23, 1931, in Anderson, South Carolina, the son of the late Emma A. and Otto C. Smith. He was preceded in death by sisters Margaret Kolb, Catherine Stover, and Emma Jean Tripp, and brother, Fred Smith. He was a graduate of Boys High School, Anderson College, and Forrest Business College. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, and fought in the Korean War. He and Katheryn married in 1955, and he began his career in finance, working with credit unions at the local, state, and national levels. After raising their family in Charleston, they later moved to Dalton in 1984 to be near their grandchildren. After retiring, Jack enjoyed substitute teaching at Dalton High School, where he loved interacting with students.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Katheryn Pruitt Smith; son, William Clayton Smith of Charleston, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly Smith Miller and Edward Clayton Miller of Dalton; and grandchildren Andrew Smith Miller of Atlanta; Grant Edward Miller of Dallas, Texas; Bryan Clayton Miller of Miami, Florida; and William Chase Miller of St. Simon’s Island, Georgia. Other survivors include special nieces and nephews.
Jack was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. He loved his family, and adored his grandsons. A true Southern gentleman, Jack is fondly remembered for his warm smile, jovial nature, and quick humor. Through the years, he enjoyed traveling with wife Katheryn both here and abroad, with Germany and Italy among his favorite destinations.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jack W. Smith will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2013, at 2:00 pm at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 901 W. Emery Street, Dalton, with the Reverend Jocelyn Bell officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 - 2 pm prior to the service.
