Clyde Hershel Smith, 91 of Dalton, passed away, December 3, 2013 at Hamilton Medical Center. Mr. Smith was born in Dawnville, Georgia on March 8, 1922. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Oran Adam Smith and Mrs. Tensie Ann Silvers, his wife of over 60 years, Mrs. Lois Edna Nunn Smith and one brother, Floyd E. Smith.
Survivors are his brothers and sister-in-laws, Harold Smith of Varnell, Leonard and Delois of Dawnville, Earl and Rachel Smith of Acworth, Hoyt and Sue Smith of Dalton, Sisters and brother-in-laws, Kathleen and Jimmy Ellis of Dawnville, Betty Lynn Masters of Dalton, several nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. A devoted associate, William J. Rocker of Alpharetta, Georgia and dedicated Caretaker Curtis Rivers, also survive.
After finishing High School at the age of 18, he went to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue his childhood dream to build bridges. Instead he began working at the General Motors Auto Assembly Plant in Doraville, Georgia as a staff employee. While working at the plant he took a course of study in industrial metallurgy from the International Correspondence School of Technology of Scranton, Pennsylvania which he completed in August of 1948. He also attended Georgia Tech and was assigned to a project with Georgia Tech as a metallurgist with the National Traffic Guard Company. This project gave him the opportunity to join the Navy, but he still had his mind on building things, so instead of joining the Navy and building bridges, he enjoyed building houses and buying and selling cars in addition to his work at GM. He built 32 houses, acquired 62 pieces of property and owned and sold 72 cars.
