Mrs. Nelle Ruth Bowen Land, 89, of Dalton, passed away Saturday June 21, 2008 at Morningside Assisted Living.
She was the daughter of the late, Rev. Berry M. and Birdie McCauley Bowen and was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Earl F. Land, Jr.; brothers, Grady Bowen, Jack Bowen and Mack Bowen; sisters, Gertrude Wallen and Mary Shelfer.
Nelle was a retired educator in the local public school systems, having taught for three years in the Whitfield County School System and the last thirty-five years in the Dalton Public School System teaching first grade. She was a charter member of Union Point United Methodist Church and more recently a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Carolyn Land, Jerry and Linda Land all of Dalton; brother, Berry M. “Jimmy” Bowen of North Augusta, SC.; sisters, Adell Tatum of Brunswick, GA. and Francis “Bay” Lightsey of Savannah, GA.; grandchildren, Mitch and Dana Land, Matt and Amy Land; great-grandchildren, Lathe Land, Bowen Land, Laken Land, McCord Land, Legend Land, Banks Land, Lanier Land and Cross Land; nieces and nephews.
Nell leaves behind a legacy of craft works and fondest memories to the delight of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as a special family at Morningside Assisted Living and three special sisters-in-law, Kathryn Jennings, Grace Whaley and Dot Richardson; also special friends, Louise Jones, Doris Ball, Catherine Percy, Nancy Gregg and Mary Jane Lewis.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 A. M. in the chapel of Love Funeral Home with the Dr. Joe Peabody and the Rev. Rhoda Howell officiating.
Burial will follow in Whitfield Memorial Gardens with her nephews serving as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home Monday from 5 to 8 P.M.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 901 Veterans Dr., Dalton, GA. 30721 or to Dalton First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 627, Dalton, GA. 30722.
