Mr. John Hugh Hackney, 94, passed away Saturday July 12, 2008 at his home.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Lee Brooker Hackney; his parents, Claude Russell Hackney and Eva Gertrude Manis Hackney; his brothers, Robert Franklin (Bob) Hackney, Thomas Fulton (Pud) Hackney, and Vernon Russell (Dick) Hackney.
John Hugh was born December 22, 1913 in Crawford, Texas. He moved to Dalton as a boy and was a life-long resident of the Dug Gap community. He was considered to be one of the pioneers in the chenille bedspread industry, working simultaneously at Brooker Spread Company and Fashion Craft Chenille. He was an avid bird-hunter and gardener, but more importantly, a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, and friend to many.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church for over 50 years and was a faithful member of the Scrap Iron Sunday School Class until his health prevented him from attending.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sandra Hackney of Dalton; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Dean Smith, Jr. of Dalton; grandchildren, Matthew Hackney of Stone Mountain, Marianna Hackney of Dalton, Dr. Katie Smith of Columbia, S.C., Carly Orlando and her husband Michael of Davidson, N.C., and Molly Smith of Dalton; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty and Joe Bill Denson of Dalton; nieces and nephews; special friends, Jean Johnson, Linda and Dennis Garrett, Herb Martin and Pleas Smith.
Services will be Monday at 11 A.M. in the Chapel of Love Funeral Home with the
burial following in Whitfield Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home Sunday from 5 to 7 P.M.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Boy Scout Troop #111, c/o First Baptist Church of Dalton, P.O. Box 827, Dalton, Ga. 30722.
