Elizabeth "Lib" Kennedy

d. June 19, 2014

Elizabeth (Lib) Frierson Kennedy passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2014. She was born November 22, 1914 in Florence, South Carolina to Alice Wilburn Frierson and William DeLancey Frierson.
Upon the death of her father from the Spanish Influenza, her family moved back to Decatur, Georgia alongside her maternal grandmother.
As a child she enjoyed taking summer trips with her siblings, Alice and Bill, back to her grandfather’s plantation, referred to as Cherryvale, located in Sumter, South Carolina.
Growing up, Lib went to Decatur Girls High in Decatur, GA and enjoyed being a cheerleader.
She met her future husband, John Leland Kennedy Jr., at Bluebird Cabin on Lake Rabun in Lakemont, Georgia, where her family vacationed in the 1920s. The extended family continues to enjoy Lake Rabun, having established a vacation home there in the 1930s that continues on to today.
On April 2, 1937, Lib married Leland in Decatur, and honeymooned in New York City.
She followed her husband, an army officer, to various CCC camps across the U.S. and to Japan after World War II during the occupation.
After the war, they moved back to Adams Street and bought a home. For almost 85 years of her 100 years, she lived on Adams Street.
Actively involved in Decatur Presbyterian Church, she served in various capacities for over 60 years. She lived out her faith – sharing her time, talents and resources to the glory of her Heavenly Father. She looked forward to each day with exuberance and joy, and a zest for life.
Having been inspired by their time in Japan, Lib’s adventurous spirit led her to travel worldwide, with many of her extended family, into her late 80s.
She leaves a legacy to her children and grandchildren of her strong Christian faith, appreciation of God’s natural world, an inquisitive nature, and a love for travel.
When asked about her living to almost 100 years, she joked that it was due to her having a Coca Cola and crackers each day, and an afternoon nap.
Lib is survived by her son John Leland Kennedy III and his wife, Diane Bryson Kennedy, her daughter, Carol Kennedy Eskew Causby, her daughter, Jean Kennedy Dantzler, and her son, Carson Ross Kennedy and his wife, Janet Whitlow Kennedy. In addition, she is survived by thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, John Leland Kennedy, a sweet daughter, Anne Frierson Kennedy, three dear sons-in-laws, Captain Samuel Perry Eskew, Richard Clayton Causby, Lloyd Byron (Danny) Dantzler, sister, Alice Frierson Gillespie, and brother, William DeLancey Frierson.
A small family graveside service will be held at Decatur Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Decatur Presbyterian Church, 205 Sycamore St., Decatur, GA 30030 or Lake Rabun Association Scholarship Fund,PO Box 490, Lakemont, GA 30552-0002.
