Elizabeth Jones Rutland

d. September 16, 2008

Elizabeth Jones Rutland, daughter of Rev. Henry H. Jones and Mrs. Annie D. Jones, died Tuesday morning, September 16, 2008, at her home in Dalton. She was 87 years old, and much loved by her family and friends. “Lib”, “Mum” and “Grandma” will be missed. As a family, we will continue to live in the love that she had for us and for her home. She will be remembered for the special joy she found in books as well as for her giftedness as a writer - and an off-the-cuff storyteller when her children were little! Some will remember the Sunday School classes she taught for many years at First United Methodist Church, brought to life by stories and illustrations from her own experience. She enjoyed volunteer work at Friendship House in her middle years, and taught second grade at Morris Street and Roan Street Schools. She found great joy in nature and its beauty. The simple creatures, flowers and trees in her own backyard were as noteworthy to her as the larger wonders that she and her husband visited in their retirement years. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert E. Rutland Sr.; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. Rutland, Jr. and Anne S. Rutland of Buffalo, NY; a daughter, Laura E. Rutland of Erie, PA; a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret R. Dyer and Henry Dyer of Roswell, GA; and three grandsons, Britt Dyer of Cumming, GA, and Alex and Nick Rutland of Buffalo, NY. She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Jessie J. Whittemore and John Whittemore of Decatur, GA and formerly of Dalton; two sisters, Mrs. Claire J. Plymel and Mrs. Laura J. Turner, both of LaGrange, GA; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Alice Rutland Brown of Marietta, GA; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 19, 2008, from 2-3 pm, at Dalton First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be on Thursday, September 18, 2008, from 6-8 pm, at Love Funeral Home, and from 1-2 pm on Friday, September 19, at Dalton First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Doc-up Ministries, care of First United Methodist Church.
