She was born on January 5, 1920 to the late Willard David and Sallie Conn Smith. Ava was preceded in death by her husband, W.L. Bramlett “Buddy”; three brothers, Conley, Fred and Thurman Smith and son-in-law, Frank Scott of Dalton.
She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Connie Scott of Dalton and Mrs. Marie (Tim) Thomas of Richmond Hill, GA; four granddaughters, Ms. Anne Marie Scott of Newport Richey, FL, Mrs. Juli (Don) Hayes of Dalton, Mrs. Suzanne (Bill) Meadows and Mrs. Christina (Mark) Douglas all of Richmond Hill, GA; six great-grandchildren, Elli and Spencer Hayes, Brandt Smith, Judd and Grace Douglas and Billy Meadows Jr.; sister-in-law, Mrs. Bettie Bramlett of Dalton; nieces and nephews.
On a cold January the 5th, 1920, Ava Nell Smith was born to Willard David and Sarah Smith. She had two brothers born after her. She was a sickly child, having to miss a whole year of school because of various illnesses. She finally recovered completely and thrived on hard work and school.
After graduating from High School, she attended business school and became a secretary. She also was blessed with a beautiful singing voice, and took private singing and elocution lessons. She became a semi-professional singer during the war.
When the war started she did what she could for the war effort. She moved to Brunswick, GA and landed a job with the U.S. Navy at Glynco Air Station as a secretary.
She loved her job there, but as the war ended she loved someone even more, William Lawrence “Buddy” Bramlett, who had been stationed in the South Pacific for 3 ½ years. They had met years earlier before the war, so they continued their courtship through letters during the war.
When Buddy was released from the service they made a beeline for each other and were married on June 14, 1946.
They had two daughters, Connie and Marie. Their marriage lasted until Buddy died in February 1996, a few months shy of 50 years of marriage.
Ava was an outstanding cook and made sure her family was well cared for. She did all of this and kept an immaculate home while working full time. She had beautiful fingernails and loved to paint them. She also loved to wear beautiful jewelry. She had a beautiful smile that would light up a room. She touched a lot of people’s lives.
Ava loved her family and God more than anything. She was a faithful servant to the Lord. She was a doting wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family brought her great joy. She taught her family patience, love, and wisdom. She was truly a southern lady who never met a stranger.
The family is grateful to LifeCare Center of New Port Richey for their amazing care during the past 11 years. Ava was the Queen Mom of the Red Hats Society that she regularly attended.
