Mrs. Katheryn Pruitt Smith, 80, of Dalton, Georgia, formerly of Anderson, SC, and Charleston, SC, passed away peacefully while visiting in Charleston on Sunday, May 17, 2015.
Katheryn was born on February 18, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of the late Rose Helena and William Raymond Pruitt. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack W. Smith, son William Clayton Smith, and sister Patricia Pruitt Smith. She was a graduate of Girls High School in Anderson, South Carolina, and attended Limestone College. After college, Katheryn and Jack married in 1955 and settled in Charleston, where she became a homemaker. Katheryn later worked for the News and Courier newspaper in Charleston. After raising their family, Katheryn and Jack moved to Dalton in 1984 to be near their grandchildren. Katheryn’s love of travel led her to become a travel agent, where she enjoyed serving her customers and traveling with her husband both here and abroad.
Katheryn is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly Smith Miller and Edward Clayton Miller of Dalton; grandsons Andrew Smith Miller and wife Laura of Atlanta, Georgia; Grant Edward Miller of Dallas, Texas; Bryan Clayton Miller of Chicago, Illinois; and William Chase Miller of Dalton, Georgia; brother, Robert Raymond Pruitt of Fairview, North Carolina. Other survivors include special nieces and nephews.
Katheryn was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. She loved her family and friends, and especially enjoyed her monthly birthday club. A true Southern lady, she had a warm smile, caring heart, and loved to laugh.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Katheryn Pruitt Smith will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at 1:30 pm, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 901 W. Emery Street, Dalton, with the Reverend V. Beth Royalty officiating.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:30 pm prior to the service in the church Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mark’s Preschool or to St. Mark’s Memorial Garden, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 901 W. Emery Street, Dalton, Georgia 30720.
