Mr. Melvin Lake, Sr., of Morris, AL. and formerly of Sumter, FL.; Leesburg, AL., and Dalton, Ga., passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2009 in Morris Alabama.
Melvin was born on March 9, 1929 in Shelby, Ohio to the late Charles and Oneita Lake and was preceded in death by wife and mother of his children, Alice Neis Lake Curtis; wife, Kitty Kent Currier Lake and grandchild, Mallory Lake.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army Airborne from 1948 to 1953; member of the First Baptist Church of Dalton; Associations: Past Exalted Ruler and Honorary Lifetime Member of Dalton, Georgia Lodge of th BPOE 1267; Lifetime Member of the Dalton, Georgia VFW 4985; Lifetime Member of the Good Sam Club; Past Member American Legion, Dalton, Georgia; Past Member Mason 105, Dalton, Georgia; Past Member Scottish Rite-Mason, Albany, Georgia; Past Member Zamora Shrine Temple, Birmingham, Alabama; Past President Shrine Club, Valdosta, Georgia; Past Member Dalton, Georgia Bulldog Club; Past Member Dalton High School Quarterback Club, Dalton, Georgia.
He worked in management in the trucking industry for 40 years, including Terminal Transport, Inc., American Freight Systems Inc., retiring from Brown Cartage Co. in Rome, Georgia in 1993.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Frances (Babes) Lake of Morris, AL.; sons, Michael Lake (Nancy) of Powder Springs, GA., Richard Lake (Janie) of Calhoun, GA., Melvin Lake, Jr. (Teresa) of Dalton, GA., Guy Raymond (Dolores) of Gardendale, AL.; daughters, Linda Lake White Hunter (Ricky) of Calhoun, GA., Debi Lake McBurney (Blake) of Alpharetta, GA., Lori Raymond McManus (Ricky) of Homewood, AL.; grandchildren, Jason, Josh and Justin Lake, Jamie Bilsky and Allyson Hall (Michael Lake), Ginny and Abby (Richard Lake), Eric White, Amanda Hall and Allyson Hunter (Linda Hunter), Mary-Alice (Debi), Lance and Lincoln (Melvin Lake, Jr.), Clark and Emily (Guy Raymond), Abby, Dalton and Hunter (Lori McManus); great-grandchildren, Autumn and Amara (Eric White), Hunter (Amanda Hall), Brock (Jamie Bilsky), Austin and Cameron (Allyson Hall), brother, Cloyce Charles Lake and sister, Angela Arnold both of Shelby, OH; many, many friends.
Services will be Saturday at 1 P.M. in the chapel of Love Funeral Home with the celebration of Mel’s life being led by Pastor David Blackwood of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church in Calhoun, Georgia with special music by George Weeks of Gardendale, Alabama.
Burial will be in Whitfield Memorial Gardens with grandsons, Eric White, Jason Lake, Josh Lake, Justin Lake, Lance Lake and Lincoln Lake serving as pallbearers and Jamie Bilsky, Clark Raymond and Dalton McManus serving as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home Saturday from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M.
