Mrs. Jane Whitehead Hurt, 82, of Dalton, died on Sunday, January 25, 2009 at Hamilton Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Elliott Hurt, Sr., her father, Wiley Wisdom Whitehead, and her mother, Era Benson Whitehead.
Mrs. Hurt was born on May 9, 1926 in Washington, GA. Following her graduation from Georgia State College for Women, she moved to Dalton to teach at Dalton High School. She later taught at Valley Point High School which became Southeast High School. After 20 years with Whitfield County Schools, she retired in 1986. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Dalton.
Jane is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Erin Hurt of Dalton; daughter, Mary Jane Dominick and Tony Wheeler of Dalton, daughter, Karen Hurt and Geneva Ledlow of San Francisco; grandsons, Joe Dominick, Trey Hurt and Nicholas Hurt. Extended family include, Martha and Jim Cook, Bob and Betty Lou Hurt, Jimmy and Cheryl Cook, Bob and Lois Hurt, Bo and Sandy Hurt, Handsel and Joy Morgan.
Jane was a part of Hurt’s Cleaners, the family business, for many years. She was known for her toll house cookies, watching the Braves and cheering on the Tennessee Lady Vols.
The services will be Tuesday, January 27th at 2:00, at the First Baptist Church of Dalton with the Dr. Bill Wilson and the Rev. Phillip Cannon officiating.
The family will receive friends in the Atrium of First Baptist Church from 12 until the funeral hour at 2. Burial will follow in Whitfield Memorial Gardens.
