Mrs. Maurine S. Poteet, 89, of the Dawnville community passed away Sunday, August 9, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Fred Poteet, who passed away on November 24, 2012. Maurine was the daughter of the late George and Laura Douthit Stafford. She was also preceded in death by her sisters; Ruby (Alton) Miller and Marco (William) Hill; brothers, Carl Stafford, George T. Stafford and Alfred (Henrietta) Ingram; nephew Eddie Miller and brother-in-law, Claude Herring. She is survived by her sister, Helen Herring of Dalton; sister-in-law, Wanda Stafford of Lafayette; special nephew, John (Lisa) Stafford, other nieces and nephews, Julie Stafford, Jennifer Stafford, Beverly Herring, David Herring, Mark Herring, Bruce Hill, Jim Miller and Jane Hill. Maurine was a retired educator, having taught for 40 years, with more than 30 years at Fort Hill School in Dalton. She and her husband, Fred, were active, long-time members of the First United Methodist Church of Dalton, joining the congregation on December 25, 1955. One of their ministries was visitation. For over 40 years, Maurine and Fred spent Sunday afternoon’s visiting patients in nursing homes, with a special desire to spend time with those who had no visitors. Maurine and Fred both loved to travel. They achieved their goal of visiting all 50 states and all seven continents. She spent New Years Day 2000 walking with the penguins in Antarctica. Maurine loved her family and friends very much. She was always willing and eager to help in any way possible. She was a great example to all of hard work, saving and sacrifice. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Tranquility Assisted Living of Dalton for their love and care for Maurine. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Robin Lindsey officiating. Burial will follow in Whitfield Memorial Gardens with John Stafford, Jack Stafford, Mark Herring, Paul Douthitt and Bruce Hill serving as pallbearers.
