Mildred Mitchell Padgett, widow of Rev. Edgar A. Padgett, and mother of Sally Wheeler of Braselton,GA, Allen Padgett of Lafayette,GA, Wade Padgett of St. Louis,MO and Kevin Padgett of San Jose,CA. passed away at Morningside of Dalton on October 2, 2015.
Mildred was born in 1920 to Lumpkin and Sallie Mitchell in Polk County, Georgia. She was the last survivor of her siblings: Howard Mitchell, Lamar Mitchell, Bill Mitchell, Helen Mitchell, Miriam Harper, Ann Morgan and Ida Mitchell. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Sara Askew, Robert Wheeler, Jim Wheeler, Sabrina Padgett and Matthew Padgett;four great-grandchildren; Ellie Wheeler, Mitchell Wheeler, Merritt Wheeler and Sloane Askew.
She was a graduate of Young Harris College and captain of the girls basketball team. In 1943, Mildred married Ed Padgett, a Methodist minister and they served in many North Georgia churches including Dalton First, Calhoun First, McDonough First, Sardis and St. James in Atlanta, Elberton First. Mildred was an excellent seamstress,avid tennis player,amazing cook,wonderful mother,grandmother a gracious Southern lady and a very special preacher’s wife.
Memorial services will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of the Dalton First United Methodist Church with Dr. Robin Lindsey officiating.
The family will receive friends in the atrium of the church on Tuesday from 2 to 3 p.m.
