Mr. John Guinn Smith, 88, of Dalton, passed away Saturday February 28, 2009 at Hamilton Medical Center.
Born April 28,1920 in Whitfield County, Guinn was the Seventh son of the late, Henry Clark Smith and Lillian Wyatt Smith of the Five Springs Community. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Rex Young Smith, Robert Earl Smith, Henry Wyatt Smith, Horace Cyrus Smith, W. A. Smith and Guy Clark Smith.
Mr. Smith graduated from Valley Point High School in 1940 and was awarded the American Farmer Degree that same year.
Guinn was veteran of the United States Army serving from 1944 to 1946, with a tour of duty in the Philippines and Japan.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Five Springs United Methodist Church from birth and served on many boards and committees. He served as treasurer for the Men’s Sunday school Class for over forty years. He helped establish the first Boy Scout Troup at Five Springs and was an active leader for many years.
Guinn Worked for the City of Dalton for over 41 years, retiring in 1991. He was expert mechanic, carpenter, farmer and avid gardener. He was a master furniture craftsman.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Bertha Mae McAdams Smith of Dalton; Daughters and son-in-law, Guinndalyn and Jim Barclay of Dalton and Sandra Smith Franklin of Lawrenceville, GA.; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Andrew Cloud of Houston, TX., Kathy and Chris Hammontree of Varnell, Lanna and Pete Knapp of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Wyatt Hammontree, Anna Guinn Hammontree, Guinndalyn Cloud and Thomas Cloud; sister-in-law, Ruth McAdams Leak of Greenville, SC.; nieces and nephews.
A worship service of celebration of the life of Guinn Smith will be 1 P.M. Wednesday at Five Springs United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. R. Allen Stewart and Rev. Kenny Bailey officiating.
Burial will follow in West Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home Tuesday from 5 to 7 P.M.
