Mrs. Sarah Jane Dyson King, 86, of Dalton, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009 after a long illness at Hamilton Medical Center.
She was the daughter of the late, Frankie Wallace Dyson and Fred Dyson of Cleveland, Tenn. and was preceded in death by her husband, George Patten King, Sr. and granddaughter, Angelia Renee King; brothers, Walter, Herman, Clint and Joe Dyson; sisters, Fred Anna Dyson, Rose Ledford, Ruby Hampton and Frankie Wade of Cleveland, Tennessee.
Sarah came to Dalton to play fast pitch softball for Redwine and Strain Association when she was 17 years old. The team proceeded to win the Georgia State Championship in 1948, where she pitched. She was also employed by Bell Craft Chenille and was a long time employee of Queen Carpets until her retirement in 1984. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
Sarah is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Audrey Jo and Donald Pilcher of Dalton; son and daughter-in-law, George Patten King, Jr. and Cheryl of Dalton; sister, Eva Montgomery of Cummings, GA.; sisters-in-law, Evvie King Gravely and Betty King both of Dalton; brother-in-law and spouse, Arnold and Jewel King of Dalton; grandchildren and spouses, Tammy and Kevin Connolly of Chattanooga, TN., Melissa and Donald “Eddie” Pilcher and Timothy and Rhonda King of Dalton, Karen and Mike Ferguson of Indiana, Megan and Patten King of Dalton, Holly King of Dalton, Ricky Hammontree of Dalton, Heather and Shawn Gravely of Resaca; great-grandchildren, Curtis King, Kevin King, Trey Pilcher, Trent Pilcher, Emily King, Erin Renee King, Ethan Patten King all of Dalton, Chris and Meghann Ferguson of Indiana, Christy and Chad Akins of South Carolina, Jessie and Burt Johnson, Michael Connolly, Zack Connolly of Tennessee, John Hammontree, Spencer Hammontree of Dalton, Jordan Gravely and Macie Gravely of Resaca; 8 great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Friday at 2 P.M. in the chapel of Love Funeral Home with Dr. Charlie Bridges officiating.
Burial will follow in West Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home Thursday from 5 to 9 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Hamilton Hospice, P.O. Box 1168, Dalton, Ga. 30722.
