The Reverend William Tolliver Squires, Sr. , 86, of Dalton, GA, died Saturday afternoon, April 29, 2006 at Memorial Hospital, Chattanooga, TN following a brief illness.
He was born in Grandin, MO in 1919, the youngest son of the late Mont Elmer Squires and Lucretia Tolliver Squires. He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Martha Louise Smith Squires .
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dalton where he attended the “Scrap Iron “ Sunday School class and sang in the New Horizons and Sanctuary choirs. Squires’ education included diplomas and degrees from Willow Springs High School, Willow Springs, MO; Southwest Baptist University, Bolivar, MO; Howard College now Samford University, Birmingham, AL; and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
Prior to retirement from fulltime Christian service, Squires, an ordained Baptist Minister, served fourteen churches as a Minister of Music and Associate Pastor. His religious vocation spanned thirty years and included Baptist communities in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and Louisiana.
He is survived by two sons, William T. Squires, Jr. and his wife Laura of Birmingham, AL and Robert K. Squires and his wife Sonja of Atlanta, GA; one daughter, Mary L. Squires of Dalton; Grandchildren, Jonathon Squires, Anna Squires, Andrew Squires, Jeremy Squires, Lydia Squires, Phillip Tolliver Squires, Daniel Squires, Jason Squires, Nicolas Squires, Gage Stille, Laura Ann Adams, and Ilona Squires.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. EST. on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at the Dalton First Baptist Church with the Reverend Larry Flanagan officiating.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. CST. on Wednesday, May 3, 2006 at the Memorial Garden Cemetery in Demopolis, AL with Arthur Evans and Mike McApline serving as Honorary Pallbearers.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 9:30 till 11:00 a.m. in the Parlor of the First Baptist Church.
