Mary Jane Hodges Dunlap, beloved mother of Alice H. Squillario and James Albert Hammack, Jr. both of Dalton, died on July 6, 2017.

She was born in Brinson, GA on July 7, 1916 to Alice Trulock Hodges and Dewitt Clinton Hodges. She was preceded in death by her parents, her 7 siblings, and the father of her children, James Albert Hammack, and husbands James S. Peters and Dr. E. B. Dunlap.

She is survived by her children, Alice H. Squillario (Doug), James Albert Hammack, Jr. (Anne); five grandchildren, Ginger McGaughey Phillips (Dean), Kate McGaughey Hudson (Kenny), Anne Hodges McGaughey, James Albert Hammack III (Liz), and Margaret Hammack Long (Jason); 5 great grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren, Jeff Squillario (Valerie) and Lee Squillario Pullen; and 4 step great grandchildren.

Mary Jane was a firm and faithful Christian. She lived her faith daily. In her church, she served as a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years and was the Chairman of the Board at the Manchester First United Methodist Church. The children’s wing of this church is named for her.

Mary Jane lived a life of service. In her community, she served on the Board of Directors of CB&T Bank. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Sorority, Future Homemakers of America, American Rose Society, and the Roosevelt Foundation. She was active in Campfire Girls with Alice and Cub Scouts with Albert. For many years, she served as chairman of the Empty Stocking Fund. She was selected “Woman of the Year” in both Blakely and Manchester, GA. She was also selected as a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club.

Mary Jane had a passion for education. She was a visiting teacher, President of the State of Georgia Visiting Teachers Association, a member of the National Education Association, and a life member of the Parent Teachers Association. She was appointed to a statewide committee to study the needs of exceptional children. She was an enthusiastic cheerleader at Georgia Southern and received her master’s degree at the University of Georgia.

As an avid sports fan, she faithfully supported the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs. She also loved basketball and played golf.
Mary Jane was known for her warm hospitality, her generous heart, her beautiful roses, her delicious food, and her genuine love and enthusiastic interest in every person she met. She loved and served her God, her family, and others.

The family would like to say thank you to all the staff of Royal Oaks and to all of her dear caretakers.

A celebration of life memorial service will be at the Dalton First United Methodist Church on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Tommy Willingham officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the atrium of the
church.

The family has asked that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to Manchester First United Methodist Church, 206 Broad Street, Manchester, GA, 31816.
