Mr. Robert Lee Higdon, 81, of Dalton, died Tuesday afternoon, October 6, 2009 at Hamilton Medical Center, following a brief illness.
He was the son of the late Wheeler and Alice Turvey Higdon of Cisco, and was preceded in death by his brothers, Sam Higdon and Lowell Higdon.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Nelloise Arrowood Higdon, and his daughter Beverly Higdon both of Dalton; aunts, Marjorie Baxter and Juliet Bonds both of Cisco, GA.; nieces and nephews.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal at Ft. Benning, Georgia.
After completing his military service, he returned to northwest Georgia, where he served as assistant manager of the Economy Auto Store on Hamilton Street in downtown Dalton. He later purchased the Otasco Store in Dalton from John Cowart and operated it as owner/manager until the store closed in 1989. At that time, Robert joined the staff of Dalton First Baptist Church as Director of Maintenance.
A devoted member of Dalton First Baptist Church, Robert served in many capacities, including deacon and many leadership positions in the Sunday School program.
Funeral Services for Mr. Robert Higdon will be Thursday at 2 P.M. at Dalton First Baptist Church with Rev. Phillip Cannon, Dr. Billy T. Nimmons, Rev. Larry Flanagan and Dr. Mickey Shealy officiating.
Charles Evans, Jack Partain, Everett Greeson, Bill Larimer, Ron Kennedy and Derrell Grantham will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Ron Kennedy’s Men’s Sunday School class.
Burial will be at Whitfield Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends in the atrium of the Dalton First Baptist Church
Thursday from 12:30 P.M. to 2 P.M.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the Dalton First Baptist Church and designated to the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home, P.O.
Box 827, Dalton, Georgia 30722-0827.
