Melvena was born May 13, 1929 and was a graduate of the Valley Point High School class of 1947. Due to a shortage of teachers after WW II, she taught second grade at Valley Point from 1947-1949. She married Haywood and left the business world to start a family. Once her children were in school she worked as a substitute teacher at Valley Point Elementary and Middle schools. In 1984, she starting working as a teacher’s aide at Valley Point Middle then transferred to Dawnville Elementary where she retired as para pro in 2000. She then helped look after her great nephews, Brandon and Brett Potts. She kept up with their activities up until her death.

Melvena is survived by her children, Rachel Morehead and Eddie Morehead; her sisters and brother in-law, Jean Stokes of Calhoun and Margaret and Earnest Cline of Dalton; nieces, nephews, cousins, and the many children whose lives she touched as an educator also survive.

Melvena loved to take car rides in the country and marveled in God’s creation, especially the azaleas and dogwoods in the spring, the crepe myrtles and hydrangeas in the summer, and the rich colors of fall.
Rachel and Eddie would like to thank Amedysis Home Health for keeping mama at home and Amedysis Hospice for helping her journey to her Heavenly home; her brother-in-law, Earnest Cline; Randy, Cynthia, Brandon and Brett Potts; Jonathan and Samantha Cline for helping mama get up from being down; our neighbor, Gwilda who helped in her final days; Dr. Lancaster and the staff of Hamilton Medical Center for their exceptional care; all of her family and friends that prayed, sent well wishes and came to visit.
