Harold Gordon Sweenie, World War II veteran, textile manufacturer, ardent gardener, sportsman, father and loving husband, died on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 in Rocky Face, GA. at the residence. Mr. Sweenie was born to Malcolm and Margaret Sweenie on October 24, 1925 in Uxbridge, MA, and had one brother, Keller Sweenie, also of Uxbridge. His parents, brother, and first wife, Mary Jane Walter Sweenie, precede him in death. Gordon served in World War II in Europe with the 17th Airborne Division; with the 82nd Airborne division in Berlin, Germany in July 1945; and in the 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment in Frankfort, Germany in 1945-1946. He attended the University of Virginia, Clark University, and graduated from Brenau College with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He was employed by Uxbridge Worsted in Uxbridge, MA and Cedartown, GA from 1951 – 1968. Gordon moved to Dalton, GA in 1968 and served as Vice-President of Manufacturing for Astroturf Industries until he retired in 1991. He served his community as president of the board of the Northwest Georgia Family Crisis Center and also served on the board of United Way. He was the longest standing member of the Dalton Kiwanis Club. In his spare time he enjoyed competitive enduro-riding, canoeing, camping, hiking, bicycling, traveling and gardening. Gordon distinguished himself by his innate kindness and genuine selfless interest in others. He is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Lana Parker Sweenie of the residence. Also surviving are five children: Lisa (Dave) Murr of Bracey, VA; William (Mary Lou) Sweenie of Chattanooga, TN; Mehgan (Derek) Wofford of Rocky Face, GA; Andrew Sweenie of Summerville, SC; and Harold Gordon Sweenie, Jr. of Acworth, GA; four grandchildren: Nicole Sweenie (Nathaniel) Barton of Dalton, GA., Gordon Smith of Wilmington, SC, Tyler (Kelsey) Wofford of Rocky Face, GA, Trevor Wofford of Rocky Face, GA; two stepchildren: Jim (Theresa) Baker of Colorado Springs, CO; Ashley (John) Davies of Tunnel Hill, GA; two step-grandchildren: Quentin Davies and Ethan Davies of Tunnel Hill, GA; three great-grandchildren; very dear friends Margeana Norris, Landon Norris and Brett Norris who were by Gordon’s side night and day, loving him and caring for him during his last months. The family wishes to thank Ms. Ashley Hunsucker and all the staff of Amedisys Hospice for the knowledgeable, tender care they gave Gordon. The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home on Sunday, January 14 from 2-4 p.m. There will be no service per Gordon’s wishes. The family asks that flowers please be omitted and memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3380 Chastain Meadows Parkway, Suite 200, Kennesaw, GA 30144.
