Betty Joyce Dabbs Tate died February 3, 2010 in her sleep at the Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home in Dalton, Georgia.

She was born in Tift County Georgia and grew up in Emerson graduating from Cartersville High School in 1952 where she was a member of the Beta Club.
Betty studied piano in her youth and served as church pianist for Emerson Baptist as well as a member of the youth choir of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta.
She attended the Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia and Columbus College.

She enjoyed a successful secretarial career having worked for F. W. Woolworth Co. in Atlanta, GA the Army Security Agency in Arlington, VA, Columbus Bank and Trust and the Social Security Administration.

She had a keen interest in politics and was an enthusiastic volunteer for the Jimmy Carter Presidential Campaign attending his inauguration in 1976.

For the past 27 years she has resided in Dalton, Georgia at the Shady Oaks Personal Care Home and Ridgewood Manor. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dalton.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charlie and Ruby Dabbs of Emerson.

She is survived by daughter Lee Ann Tate Powell, son-in-law Hoyt Powell Jr. of Savannah, GA; daughter Laura Tate Crymes and son-in-law Thomas Crymes of Sharpsburg, GA; grandchildren: Tate Crymes, Hoyt Powell III, Madison Crymes, Thomas Crymes and Leah Powell; brother Charles Berry Dabbs Sr. of Marietta; sister Patricia Dabbs Hackney, brother in-law Howard Hackney of Metamora, MI former husband John William Tate of Sharpsburg, GA and several nieces and nephews.

Pat Hackney remembers her older sister as being an encourager and having a great influence on her life especially in her formative teenage years.

The family is appreciative of the loving medical care provided to Mrs. Tate by Shady Oaks, Ridgewood Manor and her nurses and physicians over the years.

Visitation: Saturday, February 6, 2010 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. in the Atrium of the Dalton First Baptist Church

Memorial: Service at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Dalton First Baptist Church

Graveside: Services at 2:30 p.m. Emerson Cemetery, Emerson, GA

Remembrances: First Baptist Church of Dalton, GA 311 N. Thornton Ave. Dalton, GA 30720 or The Salvation Army.
