Colonel (Ret.) Stephen E. Gordy, 86, of Dalton, passed away, Friday October 27, 2006 at his residence.
He graduated from the U. S. Military Academy in June, 1943; Served in the European Theater in World War II and as an Artillery officer in battery, battalion, and group positions; Served in Third U. S. Army from the Normandy Beachhead to Austria at end of the War;
Artillery Advisor to the Turkish Army; Artillery Battalion Commander in Korea; Instructor in Department of Command, U. S. Army Command and General Staff College; Graduate, Naval War College, Newport, RI.
Member, Special Study Committee of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. This Committee made national strategy studies for the Joint Chiefs, the Secretary of Defense, and the President;
Commander, 24th Division Artillery; Member, Directorate of Inspection Services (Forerunner to the Inspector General), Office of the Secretary of Defense.
Teacher, Football and Baseball coach; Assistant principal and principal, Loudoun County Public Schools; was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates from 1982 to 1987 and was a member of the Dalton First Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Edith Stone Gordy of the residence.
Daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Bill Hyatt of Dalton, Carolyn and Bob Wetherill of Cross Plains, IN.
Son and daughter-in-law, Steven E. Gordy, Jr. and Denise of Sterling, VA.
Sisters and brother-in-law, Frances and James Wroton of St. Simons Island, GA. and Mary McMurria of Bradenton, FL.
Grandchildren, Carrie and Michael Hulsey of Sharpsburg, GA., Peter and Tanya Hyatt of Charleston, SC., Chad and Vanessa Wetherill of Baghdad, Iraq., Brett Wetherill, Fort Carson, Co., Mandy Wetherill of Cross Plains, IN., Christopher and Juliana Gordy, Mathew Gordy, Jessica and Damond Tapscott, Jason Maddens and Andrea Maddens all of Sterling, VA.
Six Great-Grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services will Monday at 4 P.M. from the First Presbyterian Church.
Burial will be in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA.
The family will receive friends at the First Presbyterian Church Monday from 3 to 4 P.M..
The family ask that flowers please be omitted and memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 510 S. Tibbs Rd., Dalton, GA. 30720.
