Mr. Lloyd Gulledge, 93, of Dalton, passed away Sunday December 5, 2010.
He was born in Decatur County Tennessee, on January 26, 1917.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dee Agnew Wright Gulledge and Margaret Frances Norden Gulledge; his loving wife of 55 years Virginia Mae Beaver Gulledge; and infant son, Eddie Dean Gulledge.
LLoyd attended Cub Creek Hall Elementary School and Parson’s High School, where he graduated 3rd highest in his class.
Later, Lloyd was a CCC Camp Soil Conservation Specialist and was drafted in to the Army as a telephone operator on April 2, 1942- four months after Pearl Harbor.
He traveled from Tunisia Africa to Naples Italy aboard a ship known as “The Liberty Type”. He was present when Mt. Vesuvius erupted and covered Pompey.
He was issued a #107 Lapel Button, a European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, 2 Bronze Service Stars, ASR Scors, 71-5 Overseas Bars, Good Conduct Medal and a WWII Victory Medal, while being noted that he had attended the Tunsian-Napels-Foggia Battle/Campaign.
He was awarded an Honorable Discharge on November 1, 1945.
Returning to the states, he worked at the Tennessee Enamel Company in Charlotte Pike. Lloyd met and married Virginia Mae Beaver from Calhoun, GA. on December 25, 1945. They had two sons, a stillborn son whom they named Eddie Dean Gulledge and on December 31, 1954 a second son named Robin “Rob”.
Lloyd worked at various newspaper positions and was hired on July 2, 1952 as a reporter/photographer for the Daily Citizen News in Dalton, GA. Lloyd retired from the Daily Citizen News after 31 years of service.
Lloyd has been a resident of Peachtree Estates for the past six years.
Lloyd is survived by his son Robin “Rob” Gulledge of Cleveland; granddaughter, Amy Gulledge Fowler and husband Ryan of Tunnel Hill along with great-grandson Bo Fowler; brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Ludell Gulledge of Parsons TN.; nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral service will be at 2 P.M. Wednesday in the chapel of Love Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the West Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday at Love Funeral Home from 5 til 9 P.M.
