Arnold S. King age 93, of Dalton passed away at his home on Nov. 29, 2018. He was born on March 23, 1925 in Dalton, Georgia.

Arnold was preceded in death by his first wife, Elinor Nance King; his parents, Charlie P. King and Maud Watters King; brothers, George P. King Sr. (Sarah), Charlie Grady King (Betty), Sam King, Ronald E. King (Frances) and Leonard Watters King; sisters, Hazel Cox (Albert), Violet Mitchell (Paul), Evie Gravely (Clyde) and Frankie Wooten (Buster).

Arnold is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Jewel Ponder Hitt King; children; Kenneth and Elizabeth King, Darrell and Susan King of Dalton and Suzanne and Michael Johnston of Charleston, SC., stepson, Clea Hitt and wife Denise of Dalton; grandsons, Blake and Laurie King, Ryan and Summer King of Dalton, Joseph and Carrie King of Charleston, SC., David and Brittany Johnston of Charleston SC., Jake King of Dalton, Brett Johnston of Charleston, SC., Jeffrey and Emma King of Rome, GA; step grandson, Ryan Hitt and wife Lauren of Chattanooga; step granddaughters, Lauren and Trey Miller and Molly and Joe Young of Chattanooga; greatgrandchildren, Ellie, Maddie, Mikenley, Miklayne and Mary Lee King of Dalton, and Oslin King of Charleston, SC., and special niece and nephew, Audrey and Donald Pilcher; a host of nieces and nephews also survive.

Arnold was born in Dalton but grew up in the Mitchell Bridge community of Whitfield County, farming and hunting and making syrup. He and George took jobs in Brunswick building ships before World War II began. After joining the Army and being trained in an artillery unit, Arnold found himself on the beaches of France three days after the D-Day invasion of Normandy in June 1944. He saw combat near St. Lo and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was a participant in the capture of the Rhine Bridge in Cologne, Germany. He was awarded five Bronze Service Stars. Arnold was a life member of the American Legion, VFW and Masonic Lodge 105.

Arnold was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a retired Dalton Fire Chief with 29 ½ years service with the Dalton Fire Department.
After retiring from the fire department, he spent many years gardening and sharing his bounty with church, family and friends.

A funeral service to celebrate the life of Arnold S. King will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. atTrinity United Methodist Church with Pastor Ash McEwen and Rev. Hoyt Jenkins officiating.

Interment will be in West Hill Cemetery.

The family will be receiving friends for visitation from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday evening at Love Funeral Home.

Mr. King will lie in state at Trinity United Methodist Church for one hour before the service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 901 Veterans Drive, Dalton, Ga. 30721.
