Azlee "Pug" Metcalf

June 11, 1925 — December 3, 2021

Ms. Azlee “Pug” Metcalf, 96, of Dalton passed away on Friday, December 3, 2021 at Regency Park Health.

She was born at home on June 11, 1925 to Cecil and Ila Smith Metcalf. Pug’s twin sister Azail “Neg” was 15 minutes her senior. The family gave them the nicknames of Pug and Neg and they stuck. She and her sister graduated from Dalton High School and worked together all of their life for Belcraft and Art-Rich. Pug said that she and her sister never had time to marry. They worked hard at their job while taking care of their brother Hershel for 36 years. Hershel was disabled due to a tragic car accident.

Pug had fond memories of vacationing with her family at their lake house on Lake Knottily. She always enjoyed reading, history, government, art and being with family. Believe it or not, she loved to pick cotton on her Granddaddy’s farm. She enjoyed the great outdoors, and playing marbles was one of her favorite games. The Blue Ridge Mountains were one of her favorite places to visit and she travelled regularly throughout the United States.

She and her twin sister and older brother had a wonderful life growing up together and had lots of cousins with which to play. There were nine sets of twins on both sides of her family. They grew up on Jones and School Street, near the Fire Station.

Pug had a wonderful outlook on life. She loved people, getting to know them as a person, and their history. She enjoyed reading the local newspaper and keeping up with the local news. She talked to her many friends by phone and having them visit. She enjoyed keeping up with the golfing world and loved Tiger Woods.

The Regency Herald, where Pug resided, described her positive attitude and zest for life as a true inspiration. Her hard work ethic, dedication to her family, and love of people was a great example of God’s gift of a wonderful life.

A graveside service will be held at 3 PM on Monday in Whitfield Memorial Gardens. Pug will be laid to rest next to her parents, brother and twin sister.
