Barbara Terrell Byerly Yarbrough, of Dalton, GA died Saturday, July 21, 2018 in Dalton following a long illness.
Mrs. Yarbrough was born in Charleston, SC on January 24, 1943, the daughter of the late Dr. Robert Terrell Byerly and Mrs. Olga Hagan Byerly of Winston-Salem, NC. She was the widow of the late Lee Cheshire Yarbrough of Thomasville, GA. She is survived by two children Melanie Quinn Hayes (Mark) of Rock Hill, SC and Robert Lyons Quinn (Noelie) of Atlanta, GA.
She graduated R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, NC in 1961, and Sullins College in Bristol, VA in 1963. In 1970, she completed her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Georgia in Athens, GA, where she resided from 1964 – 1981. While in Athens, she was a teacher at Athens Academy and Program Director at Athens Community Council on Aging; a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church; and served her community through volunteer organizations and charitable work.
In 1981 she and her husband moved to Dalton, GA, where they owned and operated The Love Shop, a Christian bookstore at Walnut Square Mall. During her years in Dalton she served as the Executive Director for Dalton Area Hospice and helped to open the Royal Oaks Retirement Community.
Mrs. Yarbrough was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, where she served on the vestry since 1993. Her passions were her church, her children, volunteer work and playing handbells with the St. Mark’s Canterbury Handbell Choir.
She was a lifelong volunteer, serving her churches, the Girl Scouts as troop leader, the American Cancer Society, Outreach, Hospice and other charitable organizations.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 901 W. Emery St., Dalton, GA at 11:00 AM, with the Reverend Susan Butler officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
