Billie Jean Ownbey, 89, of Dalton, passed away at Hamilton Medical Center on Monday, June 5, 2023. Billie Jean was born in Cleveland (Bradley County), TN on June 20, 1933. She is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Esther McCann, grandson, James Clayton Ownbey; and siblings, J. B. Wompler, Harold Wompler, Hazel Ponder, Ruby Bryant, Shirley McCann, Janice Campbell, and Arthur McCann. She is survived by her sons, Rodney (Lisa) Ownbey and Rudy Ownbey; grandchildren, Christa (Will) Gray, Brandi Ghanam, and Andrea Ownbey; great-grandchildren, James Landon Ownbey, Savannah Gray, Beyonce (Gabriel) Hippo, Aedan Ghanam, Valentina Rose Scarfo, and Giovanni Scarfo; great-great-grandchildren, Lola and Stassie Hippo; siblings, Don McCann, Herman McCann, Lillian Moore, and Patsy Edwards; and many nieces and nephews.
Known as “Sweet Billie” to many of her friends, Billie Jean was known for her kindness and sweet disposition in whatever situation she found herself. She exhibited unconditional love to anyone with whom she came into contact. She embraced life as fully as a person can. She had a deep love for music. More than anything, she was known for her deep love for all her family. She will be missed deeply by them and by all who loved her.
A memorial service for Billie Jean Ownbey will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Love Funeral Home with Reverend Phillip Cannon officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church of Dalton (P.O. Box 827, Dalton, GA 30722).
