Charles S. Thomas, Jr., 93, of Dalton, GA died Monday, May 17, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents Jewel and Spurgeon Thomas and his sister Frances Purvis. He is survived by his wife Betty “Mac” McCallie Thomas, daughter Rebecca (Hilliard) Jolly of Dalton and son Charles “Chuck” (Rebecca) Thomas lll of Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren Robb (Stacey) Jolly, Robin (Richard) Hasselberg, Lindsey (Tim) Murphy, Lauren (Alan) Duncan, Charlie Thomas IV and Adele Thomas; great grandchildren Eli Hasselberg, Max Hasselberg, Mia Jolly, Hayes Murphy, Penn Murphy and Mac Murphy; nieces Patricia Purvis, Kim (Steve) Crane, grand nieces Dana and Anna Crane.
Charlie met the love of his life, Mac McCallie, at the University of Tennessee in 1945 and shared heart and home with her for 74 wonderful years. Returning to Dalton, for five decades he worked at and ultimately directed Log Cabin, a company founded by his mother Jewel in the 1930s. He brought his enthusiasm and generosity of spirit to every task, whether it was packing a carton, loading a truck, or balancing an accounting book. Log Cabin was and remained literally and figuratively a family business. Mutual respect and affection were the hallmarks of “the plant.”
He was a longtime, active member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as usher, youth advisor, deacon, elder, and pastoral search committee member.
Charlie was a devoted husband and father and was a beloved “Papa” to grandchildren and great grandchildren, who admired and adored him. He shared his zest for sport, fellowship, service, and practical jokes with his many true friends of all ages. No one could resist his warmth, humor, and generous spirit. He made family and friends feel welcome and loved. He was a role model as a family man, businessman and community servant. We will all miss sitting in the sunshine of his smile.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Dalton Place Memory Care and to Amedisys Hospice for their care of Charlie.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Selvidge St on Sunday, May 23, 2021 at 3:00 pm with Dr. Will Scott officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 pm in the commons of the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to First Presbyterian Church or NW GA Humane Society.
