Don Allen Gunter

Don Allen Gunter of Dalton, 70, departed this life on February 4, 2024, at his home after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Allen was a car-enthusiast and master mechanic. In his younger years, he was a professional drag racer, and achieved a world record in competitive eliminator-class drag racing. He also won the 1981 Winston Cup National Championship. As a hobby, he loved to restore and collect classic muscle cars. He worked for General Motors for 47 years before retiring in 2017 and took pride in doing a job the right way. Allen and his wife, Gloria, attended Crown View Baptist Church.

Allen was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Marion Gunter Sr. and Ellene Gunter. He is survived by his loving wife, Gloria, to whom he was married for nearly 47 years. He is also survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Ashley Gunter and Michael and Cara Gunter. He adored his three grandchildren: Brooklyn, Avery, and Luke Gunter. Allen is the brother of Marion Gunter Jr. (Lola) and Linda Martel (Melvin). He is the uncle of Joey Martel, Traci Martel, Brian Gunter, and Janet Suggs. Great nieces and nephews also survive.

Allen is very loved by his family and will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends in a time of visitation from 12:00 noon-2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at Love Funeral Home. Funeral services for Allen will also be on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, in the Chapel of Love Funeral Home at 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Dug Gap Baptist Cemetery.
