Evelyn Mildred Myers

Evelyn Myers, age 93, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family at her residence in Dalton, Georgia on Saturday, February 20, 2021.

She was born in Dalton, Georgia and remained a lifelong resident. Evelyn was the daughter of Millard Bentley Huffaker and Fannie Bell Huffaker. She was born in the Happy Top section of Dalton and was a child of the Great Depression. She graduated from Dalton High School in 1945 where she was the Drum Major of the Dalton High School Catamount Marching Band.

She was preceded in death by her parents Jack and Fannie Bell Huffaker and her husband Raymond Eugene (Gene) Myers, who passed away in 1981 at age 53. She was also preceded in death by her sister Frances Cooper and brother Buster Huffaker.

Evelyn Myers is survived by daughter Vicky Nixon of Atlanta and her sons and their spouses Rick and Lisa Myers and Ray and Courtney Myers. She also leaves behind six grandchildren, Justman Myers, Hunter Myers, Sinclair (Callie) Myers, Palmer Nixon, Gwinn Nixon, and Bentley Myers. Also included are great-grandchildren Archie and Louie Myers of Nashville, Tennessee.

Evelyn co-founded Myers Carpet Company with her husband Gene Myers in 1957. She worked side by side with her husband for many years and watched the business grow into what it is today, Myers Flooring Dalton, Myers Flooring Atlanta, and Myers Flooring Nashville. In the year 2000 Evelyn purchased and restored the historic Judd House on Walnut Avenue in Dalton built by Lenna Judd in 1921. She renovated and preserved a part of Dalton, Georgia’s history. Evelyn Myers earned The Georgia Historic Trust 2002 Preservation Award presented to The Judd House for Excellence in Rehabilitation.

Special thanks are given to Evelyn’s care givers Patti Cale, Freda Harrison, and Brenda Taylor. A very special thanks goes to Hamilton Hospice of Hamilton Health Care System of Dalton for making her last days so comfortable. The Myers family sincerely appreciates the night and day care her daughters in law Lisa Myers and Courtney Myers provided to her the last week of her life.

The Myers family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2pm on Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Dalton. Funeral services will begin at 2 pm on Thursday at First Baptist Church and will be officiated by Senior Pastor Jonathan Barlow. Due to the National Health crisis and the Covid-19 virus, masks must be worn properly at all times and social distancing is provided in the sanctuary with nine feet separating the attendees. In lieu of flowers, the Myers family requests that contributions be made in memory of Evelyn Myers to The Whitfield Healthcare Foundation, P.O. Box 1168, Dalton, Ga. 30722-1168.
