Fred Nash G ó mez, self-proclaimed ladies’ man, avid Diet Dr. Pepper drinker, life-long lover of Tabasco sauce, and dancer extraordinaire moved in with our Lord and Savior on April 13, 2023. He passed peacefully at home, surrounded by family. Freddy, as his friends and family sometimes called him, was born in Crosswell, Michigan, grew up in Kokomo, Indiana, and lived out his adult life in Dalton, Georgia. He loved his family, God, Waffle House, and all things chocolate. Fred had a gregarious personality and was one of the most kindhearted, generous, and friendly souls a person could ever know. And that smile...his infectious smile would light up an entire room. He was a loving father, passing on his honesty, integrity, humor, determination and strong will to his children. Being a lifelong mechanic, specializing in auto body repair, he thoroughly enjoyed being surrounded by his antique cars and old car parts while hanging out at his ‘shop’ every day. Beyond his exceptional passion for dancing, which never wavered throughout his life, he was also known for his love of fishing, watching old Westerns, wheeling and dealing, keeping a straight face while telling a joke, and expertise in shooting the bull with friends. His attire was simple and frequently accompanied by a stack of folded napkins or paper towels in the back pocket of his pants along with a toothpick over his ear. You could often find him singing along with golden oldies’ songs as he would tap his foot to the beat. Most people didn’t know it, but Fred had a beautiful singing voice. He was gentle, yet tough as nails, lived life on his own terms, and with his modest stature was bigger than life.
Those who were there to meet him in heaven with open arms were his parents, Ignacio Gómez, and Trinidad “Trini” Cavazos G ó mez Pérez; his sister, Annie G ó mez Quinn; brothers, Henry Gómez and Amaro Pérez; close cousin, José “Joe” Cavazos; his mother-in-law, Lither Stanley, who loved him like her own son; and nephews Tim and Mark DeWeese. His memory is kept alive by his children Kena Gómez Wheeler and James “Jimmy” Gómez of Tunnel Hill, Georgia, Kenny Gómez (Tammy) of Chatsworth, Georgia, and Trini Gómez (Wayne) of Dalton, Georgia. He is also survived by his close sister, Mary Gómez, of Kokomo, Indiana, and other siblings, Alice Rodriguez and Linda Hesless (Mario) of Eagle Pass, Texas, and Ray Pérez (Debra) of Marana, Arizona; favorite cousin, Jesse “Tink” Gonzales of Kokomo, Indiana, who he thought of as a brother; grandchildren, Nicholas Barnes (Chrystal) of Tunnel Hill, Georgia, Tyler Mathis, and Drew Wheeler (Holly) both of Dalton, Georgia, Aaron Grant (Paiton) of Chatsworth, Georgia, and Britney Grant Murphy (Kevin) of Sugar Hill, Georgia; main squeeze, ex-wife and dearest friend, Kae Stanley of Tunnel Hill, Georgia, who helped care for him; many nieces and nephews, several great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
The family would like to thank Heartlite Hospice and their kind staff for taking such good care of Fred during the last weeks of his life. Special thanks to nurse Hayley and to Rose. Nurse Hayley would always say “Good morning, good looking” on every visit, keeping Fred's “ladies’ man” reputation intact until the very end.
In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated. To honor Fred’s life, a tribute memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Love Funeral Home in Dalton, Georgia. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 3:00 – 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
